Bennerley Fields School

Nurture. Support. Aspire. Achieve.

Key Stage 1 and 2

Pupils in our primary classes access a cross curricular, topic based approach to learning. Learning opportunities in the four areas of need (Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, Physical and/ or sensory development) run through the curriculum.

Our curriculum projects provide stimulating, engaging topics on which to structure learning. The topics are relevant and meaningful to the pupils, enabling then to put their knowledge into context whilst developing skills. Each class personalises the curriculum projects to meet the individual learning, sensory needs and interests of the class group.

In our primary classes there are two curriculum stages class teachers utilise to plan exciting and meaningful learning activities.

Dovedale and Newstead classes engage in a holistic, sensory based curriculum which we call pout Stage 1 curriuculum. Pupils learn through carefully planned teacher lead tasks whilst providing opportunities for learning through pupil lead activities. Learning also takes place through play, and participation in shared experiences. The topics incorporate learning in: English, communication language and engagement, how my world works, my personal development, my creativity, my community.  In addition, class timetable includes: maths, PSHE/ RSE and RE.

Chatsworth and Hardwick engage in a subject based approach to learning which builds on their foundation and life experiences extending their knowledge and skills through a balance of practical and table based activities. Sensory regulation is integrated into the daily timetable. The topics incorporate learning in: English, science, art, humanities, technologies and music. In addition, class timetables include: maths, P.E, PSHE, RSE and RE.

‘Beyond Bennerley’ provides opportunities to enrich their experiences and provides pupils with cultural capital and learning outside the classroom.
