Our Intent
At Bennerley Fields School, we recognise that our pupils have diverse and individual communication needs. Many rely on a total communication approach to support understanding, self-expression, relationships and learning. Our aim is to ensure every pupil has the means, reasons and opportunities to communicate, using evidence-based communication models to guide our practice. We are committed to creating a consistent communication environment where Makaton is used naturally across lessons, routines and social interactions. Makaton helps develop pupils’ independence, emotional regulation and social participation, supporting positive communication growth.
How We Implement Makaton Embedding Makaton Across School Life
• Staff greet and interact with pupils using Makaton, creating a welcoming and predictable communication environment.
• Makaton symbols are used throughout the school to support independence when navigating rooms, routines and activities.
• Teachers and support staff use Makaton consistently during lessons to aid understanding, reduce anxiety and reinforce key concepts. Training and Family Support
• Staff receive regular Makaton training and coaching from school-based specialists and external tutors.
• Families are supported through workshops and resources so that communication strategies can continue at home.
Impact for Our Pupils
• Pupils gain clarity and confidence in expressing their wants, needs and ideas.
• A more inclusive, calm environment is created, with pupils better able to manage transitions and express emotions.
• Communication approaches are tailored to each child’s profile, supporting better progress toward EHCP outcomes.
What Is Makaton?
Makaton is a multi-modal communication system that uses signs, symbols and speech to support understanding and expression.
Why We Use Makaton
• Signs provide visual cues that support spoken language.
• Symbols support pupils who have limited speech or prefer not to sign.
• Makaton is flexible and can be personalised to each learner’s needs.
How Makaton Helps Our Pupils.
Makaton combines speech with signs and symbols to make communication clearer. Staff also use facial expressions, eye contact and body language to give pupils as much information as possible.
At Bennerley Fields We are proud to have a Makaton Regional Tutor on our staff team, who provides high-quality training for staff across the school.
