On the first weekend of September Luke and Billy (from 3M last year) visited some of the First World War battlefields in Belgium and France. We travelled with schools from across the East Midlands. Our base was Ypres in Belgium, the scene of four years of fierce fighting. We also made a day trip to Thiepval in France to visit some of the battlefields of The Somme. the Menin Gate and Thiepval Memorial to the Missing were also on the itinerary. Some of our pupils have relatives that died in the fierce fighting there and there were chances to lay wreaths. Billy and Luke did this at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, near the top of the Passchendaele ridge. We visitied the memorial to the Notts + Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment - the unit in which many of our relations served.

We made a short film to show during assembly. If you want to see it click HERE.
